Why KeyChat

So you do not have to buy another AI subscription

KeyChat is a small tool built so the model you already pay for does not have to be paid for twice. No company, no investors — features get added slowly and only when needed.

Why

Subscriptions are convenient, buying another one is not

AI chat subscriptions are convenient. But using one more model usually means buying one more subscription — even though the same model is already available through an API.

KeyChat is a thin interface over that key: choose a model, paste the key, talk. That is the whole product.

No server processes your AI requests. The optional account server only handles sign-in and the user store, so there is still no way for us to see your key or your chats.

Do not pay twice for the same model. That is the entire point of this site.

Principles

Three things we try to keep true

  • 01

AI requests never pass through us

The site ships as static files and requests go from your browser to the provider API.

  • 02

    Everything works without an account

Every chat feature works without signing up. An account is only for restoring purchases and publishing to the user store.

  • 03

    Chat features are never locked

Chat, memory, lorebooks and the character creator are free. We only sell official character licences and server storage.

Funding

Funded by ads and optional purchases

There is no chat fee. Ads, plus official character licences and server storage for those who want them, keep the site running.

If ad revenue stops covering costs, the site may shut down. That is why ads are always labelled and kept apart from content.

Coming in

  • Advertising
  • Character and set licences
  • Storage plus

Going out

  • Domain
  • Static hosting
  • Account and user store server
  • Build and maintenance time

Chat fee revenue: none

Limits

What it is bad at

An about page that only lists strengths is hard to trust. Here is what this site cannot do.

  • No sync between devices

Without a server, conversations live per browser and per device. Moving them means exporting and importing JSON.

  • Some providers block browser calls

Providers that do not allow CORS may reject direct calls. Routing through OpenRouter usually works.

  • Key safety depends on your environment

Shared devices, browser extensions and malicious scripts are outside our control. Pick the stricter storage mode.

  • Answers are not guaranteed to be correct

Models get things wrong. For medical, legal or financial decisions, check the source and consult a professional.

  • Features arrive slowly

A maintainable structure matters more than a long feature list. If something is missing, email us.
